Blogging

Time marches on and I keep failing to blog promptly! But, never fear, the book club still marches on and meets. We need you to join us! Lately meetings have seen only 2-3 members show up - we're not sure how long we can continue like that. If you like the books and think about coming, please just come! We are laid back and low pressure. Sometimes some of us don't read the book. And we will bring cookies!
Anyway, I didn't get a chance to blog about Tamai Kobayashi's Prairie Ostrich. It's one of those books that's not only good, not only gripping and a page-turner, but it feels like it's changing your life and worldview as you read and you are seriously almost traumatized when it's over. You MUST read!
Malinda Lo's The Huntress was good and definitely a page-turner as well. Not life changing though. One of the things we really enjoyed was the matter-of-factness of same-sex relationships in this fantasy world. It felt good!
We've selected a few titles for the coming months - June's title is Rae Spoon's First Spring Grass Fire. A couple of members had the pleasure of seeing Rae Spoon at the Gender Failure show with Ivan Coyote last month. Great show. July we're reading Awakening to Sunlight by Lindsay Stone. August's selection is Bottle Rocket Hearts by Zoe Whittall. We loved her Holding Still for As Long As Possible, so decided to read another. Another repeat author is Naomi Alderman. Can't wait to read The Liar's Gospel in September. And for October, Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour.

Our (Slightly) New Name!!

Hi friends! After 17-odd years, we’re making a tiny little change to our name. We’ve heard from some in the community that it wasn’t inclusive enough. We mulled over lots of big changes but in the end we’ve settled for subtle. From here on, we’re Edmonton Lesbian+ Book Club. We hope this keeps us in your search engines but also lets our enby and trans friends know this group is open. Just to reiterate WHO WE ARE: We welcome queer women of all ages, genders, ethnicities, religious backgrounds, and socio-economic classes to attend. We also welcome the presence of their families, friends, and community members who get it. We wish to specifically extend a welcoming invite to Indigenous and Black women, disabled women, fat women, trans men and women, bisexual women, non-binary peeps, people of colour, and asexual women. We commit to doing our best to engage with parts of our communities that have been excluded. As such, there will be no identity policing and we trust that each and every one
